This final section on starships contains a list of non-canon starship classes that have been contributed by various fans. They may be used in campaign play if a GM decides to allow their use. The starships presented here are all default starships of their respective classes. Should the GM allow one of these starships as the main ship for a PC group, these values can be vastly different depending upon what equipment the group decides to outfit their ship with. In those cases the GMs should follow all the usual restrictions for ships in the Starflight canon.

Vanguard-class Battlecruiser

Vanguard-class Battlecruiser
This is a
Vanguard-class battlecruiser. It has a mass of 1250 Imperial tons, four class five engines, two twin class six laser cannons on its dorsal and one on its ventral side. It has three forward firing missile tubes, one rear firing, each of which can handle missiles in the Class Three to Five class range. The class also has a small, steerable missile launcher that retracts into the hatch on its dorsal, which fires short-ranged, anti-missile rounds. Shielding maxes out at Class Seven.
It has a high maximum combat speed, but relatively slow acceleration, and moderate to sluggish manueverability. Armor is very light, as most of the ship's protection comes from the shields. The later models (post 3450's) had special equipment that increased their rate of shield recharge and extended the effective range of their laser cannons.
Due to public aversion to any large amount of military spending (owing to the trauma of the First Wave), these ships were around only in small numbers at the start of the Second Wave, the first having been built in the decade before. They proved themselves a superior match for Uhlek scouts, which were unable to remain in close quarters with the
Vanguards, despite having a manuverability advantage and faster rate of missile fire. Gazurtoid scouts were no match for them, although Gazurtoid warships could overwhelm them with their sheer number of laser cannons. Uhlek warships vastly outmatched them, able to pummel them at longer ranges with plasma bolts before they could get within effective laser range.
The
Vanguards remained a Imperial mainstay during the Second Wave, continuing to be constructed right up until the end, when the
Noah missions began to demand most of the ship building capacity of the few remaining Imperial worlds. They represented the culmination of centuries of Imperial ship design, initially copied from the Veloxi and still recognizable as descendent from them. As such, the hull design, engine placement, and weapons layout was fairly conventional.

Ares-class battleships had one of the longest gestation periods of any of the Old Empire warships. With the money-conscious Legislature unwilling to finance their steep cost in peace time, they remained on drawing boards in one form or another for decades before the start of the Second Wave. The beginning of the Wave did little to change their disposition, though, as experience quickly showed the danger the plasma bolt posed to large, sluggish ships, and strategic thought shifted towards smaller vessels armed with one or two powerful weapons.
By the 3440's, however, breakthroughs in shielding technology revived the battleship concept, and the energy requirements of nascent plasma weaponry necessitated larger hulls with multiple, higher-classed engines to be effective. As a result, the
Ares class was redesigned with these systems in mind, and was the first in the fleet to be fitted with shield recharge enhancements, a technology later retrofitted to the existing
Vanguard-class.
Because of their high price tag, the
Ares-class numbered only a few vessels, but soon earned a formidable reputation for themselves, particularly against the Gazurtoid, who had just deployed their anti-missile shield tech to great effect. Due to their heavy protection and multiple layers of offensive potential, they were often used as flagships, a role they excelled at due to their accommodations and redundant systems.

Pophopse-class Transport

Pophopse-class was conceived out of the necessity to haul the component structures of the first Colonial Support Station (which is still called "Starport Earth" by the press, despite the lack of support for the originally proposed structure). The Sol system had no infrastructure, and Earth had few minerals for construction on-site, so it was necessary to determine a way to haul them out to the site after construction and to assemble them upon arrival. The component capsules were huge; the largest ones had an internal volume of close to fourteen hundred cubic meters, well past the fifty cubic meters the cargo bays on an
Intrepid-class starship were designed to handle. A scout ship couldn't handle it; what was need was a bulk freighter. Engineers ultimately submitted a design to the Council; after consideration, a dozen of these specially made freighters were requisitioned.
Much of the
Pophopse-class is, as might be expected, devoted to hauling cargo. With an internal capacity of 7,055 m
3, a single ship of the class can carry over eight times the volume of goods of any other ship in Interstel's arsenal. This space comes at the sacrifice of a lot of crew space; quarters on the ship are much more cramped than on other Arth vessels. The large cargo bays also bulk up the ship's silhouette; were one of these ships to enter into a combat situation, it would find itself an exceptionally easy target (though it does have minimal defensive capabilities).
With the design of Starport Earth such as it was and given the large capacity of these ships, all of the component pieces of the station were on-site in just two back-and-forth trips for all but two ships; the others hauled out the final components and the station's first set of colony pods, respectively.
